Alan Rockefeller

American mycologist.

Alan Rockefeller (born c. 1980) is an American mycologist who specializes in fungi photography, microscopy, DNA barcoding, and taxonomy. National Geographic described Rockefeller as "one of the most well-known mycologists studying psilocybe species", citing his memorization of Latin names and his extensive knowledge of mushrooms from the West Coast. Rockefeller, an expert in collection and classification of psilocybin and muscimol mushrooms, has used phylogenetic and microscopic analysis to identify several species not previously described. Rockefeller participates in several citizen scienc

Psilocybe allenii (Cyclone Psilocybe) Borov., Rockefeller & P.G. Werner 2012
fungi species in the hymenogastraceae family
Psilocybe allenii is a species of agaric fungus in the family Hymenogastraceae. Described as new to science in 2012, it is named after John W. Allen, who provided the type collection. It is found in the northwestern North America from British Columbia, Canada to Los Angeles, California, most commonly within 10 miles (16 km) of the Pacific coast. The fruitbodies (mushrooms) grow on rotting wood, especially wood chips used in garden landscaping. The caps of the mushrooms are brown to buff, broadly convex to flattened and have a diameter up to 9 cm (3.5 in), while the white stipes are up to 9 cm
Psilocybe ingeli B. Van der Merwe, Rockefeller & K. Jacobs 2024
fungi species in the hymenogastraceae family
Psilocybe ingeli is a species of psilocybin-containing mushroom which was identified in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa and was described along with Psilocybe maluti in 2024. Psilocybe ingeli is named after the Ingeli mountain range, where the type specimen was found. It's a saprobic species, deriving nutrients from decomposing organic matter, a trait common within the genus Psilocybe. It is the second species of psilocybin-containing mushroom to be observed in Africa, following Psilocybe natalensis and preceding Psilocybe maluti. The production of psilocybin in Psilocybe ingeli is thought to
Psilocybe caeruleorhiza (Winter Teacher) Canan, Ostuni, Rockefeller & Birkebak 2024
fungi species in the hymenogastraceae family
Psilocybe caeruleorhiza, commonly known as the winter teacher is a psilocybin mushroom native to North America. It is a member related of Psilocybe section Aztecorum and a close relative of the European Psilocybe serbica and North American Psilocybe aztecorum. This species was first documented from Iowa in November 2021 by iNaturalist user "runmex".
Mycena nebula Cortés-Pérez, Desjardin & Rockefeller 2019
fungi species in the mycenaceae family
Mycena nebula is a species of fungus belonging to the Mycena genus. It was discovered in Veracruz in Mexico growing on moss-covered bark on living trees. It was documented in 2019 by A. Cortés-Pérez, Desjardin, and A. Rockefeller.
