Alan William Archer

Australian lichenologist (1930 - ).

Alan W. Archer (born 1930) is a mycologist and taxonomist. He is currently (January 2021) an honorary research associate at Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney. He uses chemotaxonomy as well as morphological features in taxonomy and to devise keys, most recently for the genus Pertusaria in the Australasia region. During his career he has characterised and revised over 100 fungal taxa. He is an authority on the family Graphidaceae from the Australia - Pacific region and characterised Carbacanthographis salazinica and Phaeographis salazinica. He was also the first to characterise several members of th

Phaeographis tuberculifera A.W. Archer 2001
fungi species in the graphidaceae family
Phaeographis tuberculifera is a species of saxicolous (rock-dwelling) crustose lichen in the family Graphidaceae, first described in 2001. This lichen features a pale greenish-brown thallus with a characteristically bumpy or warty surface, and is exclusively found growing on rock surfaces in northern Queensland, Australia. It is distinguished from related species by its warty appearance, its elongated black reproductive structures that are partially hidden within the lichen's main body, and its small, four-chambered spores. P. tuberculifera appears to be endemic to Australia, with its known

Pertusaria epacrospora A.W. Archer 1991
fungi species in the pertusariaceae family
Pertusaria epacrospora is a rare species of corticolous (bark-dwelling), areolate lichen in the family Pertusariaceae. Found in Australia, it was formally described as a new species in 1991 by lichenologist Alan W. Archer. The type specimen was collected in Park Beach (Coffs Harbour, New South Wales) at sea level; here, it was found growing on trees in a coastal sand dune. The lichen has a thin, pale yellowish-green thallus lacking soredia and isidia. It has numerous wart-shaped apothecia, the same colour as the thallus, which measure 0.4–0.8 mm in diameter and which have a single,
Fissurina elixii (A.W. Archer) A.W. Archer 2005
fungi species in the graphidaceae family
Fissurina elixii is a species of corticolous (bark-dwelling), script lichen in the family Graphidaceae. It is found in New South Wales and Tasmania in Australia.
Austrographa Sparrius, Elix & A.W. Archer 2013
fungi genus in the roccellaceae family
Austrographa is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Roccellaceae. It has three species. The genus was circumscribed in 2013 by lichenologists Laurens Sparrius, John Elix, and Alan Archer, with Austrographa kurriminensis assigned as the type species. The genus had been published invalidly on two separate occasions. All three species in the genus were found in a mangrove stand in Queensland, Australia. The genus was discovered in Australia, and the name Austrographa reflects this.
Acanthothecis borealis A.W. Archer & Elix 2007
fungi species in the graphidaceae family
Acanthothecis borealis is a rare species of corticolous (bark-dwelling) script lichen in the family Graphidaceae. Found only in the Northern Territory in Australia, it was described as new to science by Australian lichenologists Alan W. Archer and John Elix in 2007. The species is characterized by its inconspicuous lirellae, which are apothecia that are simple, straight, curved, or sinuous (bendy) in shape, with lips closed and a conspicuous thalline margin, and the presence of protocetraric acid. The thallus of this species is off-white to pale grey. It has elongate-ellipsoid ascospores that
Acanthothecis aquilonia A.W. Archer & Elix 2008
fungi species in the graphidaceae family
Acanthothecis aquilonia is a species of corticolous lichen in the family Graphidaceae, and was first described in 2008 by Alan Archer and John Alan Elix. The holotype (CANB 769685.1) was collected in Australia's Kakadu National Park from a tree trunk in lowland monsoon forest, on 10 August 2005 by Alan Archer.

It favours the subtropical to temperate rainforest habitats that are characteristic of eastern Australia's coastal ranges.
