Bettina Staiger

German lichenologist.

Bettina Staiger (born 1968) is a German lichenologist known for her systematic studies of tropical lichen families, particularly the Graphidaceae. Born in Stuttgart, she completed her doctoral research at the University of Regensburg under Klaus Kalb's supervision, defending her dissertation on Graphidaceae taxonomy in 2002. Her research combines traditional morphological methods with chemotaxonomy and molecular phylogenetics, producing influential monographs on several lichen genera including Haematomma, Diorygma, and Ramboldia. She received the prestigious de Candolle Prize in 2004 for her c

Glyphis scyphulifera (Ach.) Staiger 2002
fungi species in the graphidaceae family
Glyphis scyphulifera is a species of corticolous (bark-dwelling), crustose lichen in the family Graphidaceae. It was first formally described as a new species in 1814 by the Swedish lichenologist Erik Acharius, who classified it in the genus Lecidea. William Nylander proposed to transfer the taxon to the genus Gyrostomum in 1862, and then later (1866) to Thelotrema. Bettina Staiger reclassified it in Glyphis in 2002, as part of a large-scale restructuring of the Graphidaceae. Some species of lichenicolous (lichen-dwelling) fungi are known to use Glyphis scyphulifera as a host. These include
Carbacanthographis Staiger & Kalb 2002
fungi genus in the graphidaceae family
Carbacanthographis is a genus of corticolous (bark-dwelling) lichens in the family Graphidaceae. The genus was circumscribed by the German lichenologists Bettina Staiger and Klaus Kalb in 2002. An updated worldwide key to the genus was published in 2022 that added 17 new species. This revision allowed for further identification of undescribed species from other collections, and subsequently, 14 species were added in 2023 from the Amazonian lowland forests of Brazil and the Guianas.
Platythecium Staiger 2002
fungi genus in the graphidaceae family
Platythecium is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Graphidaceae. It comprises 25 species. Described in 2002 by the German lichenologist Bettina Staiger, these bark-dwelling lichens are found in humid, shaded forests across tropical and warm temperate regions worldwide. They are characterized by their flattened, plate-like fruiting structures with completely blackened walls and are sensitive to forest disturbance, making their presence an indicator of long-established woodland conditions.
Pallidogramme Staiger, Kalb & Lücking 2008
fungi genus in the graphidaceae family
Pallidogramme is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Graphidaceae. It has 8 species of corticolous (bark-dwelling), crustose lichens.
Carbacanthographis subalbotecta Staiger & Kalb 2002
fungi species in the graphidaceae family
Carbacanthographis subalbotecta is a species of corticolous (bark-dwelling) script lichen in the family Graphidaceae. The species was formally described by the German lichenologists Bettina Staiger and Klaus Kalb in 2002. The type specimen was collected by the second author between Jaciara and São Vicente, about 100 km east-southeast of Cuiabá (Mato Grosso, Brazil); there, at an elevation of about 750 m (2,460 ft), it was found growing in a cerrado habitat. The lichen contains two secondary metabolites (lichen products): lichexanthone and protocetraric acid.
