Francis Robert Muter Wilson

Australian lichenologist (1832-1903).

Francis Robert Muter Wilson (1832–1903), Presbyterian minister at Kew, Melbourne, was arguably Australia's first lichenologist. He came to Australia in 1862 to minister at Kew, but developed an interest in the natural world. He discovered many Australian and Pacific Island species of lichens. His collecting trips took him to Lorne, Lakes Entrance, Ferntree Gully, Brisbane, Sydney and Suva, Fiji. Between 1897 and 1900 he wrote at least 20 articles on lichens, publishing many new species. After his death his collections were purchased by the National Herbarium of New South Wales and the National

Neophyllis F. Wilson 1891
fungi genus in the sphaerophoraceae family
Neophyllis a small genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Sphaerophoraceae. The genus is endemic to Australasia, occurring in southeastern Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. It comprises two recognised species characterised by small, leaf-like structures (squamules) and black, spherical spore-producing structures (apothecia). The more common and widespread species, N. melacarpa, typically grows on rotting wood and soil in various forest and heathland habitats, while the rarer N. pachyphylla is found mainly on granite and sandstone substrates. First proposed in 1889 as Phyllis and

Originally discovered in Australia in 1889 growing on Eucalyptus fence posts, it specialises in colonising hard, sun-exposed wood that has been naturally weathered. The species has an unusual distribution, being found in Australia, New Zealand, and also at a single site in southern England, making it one of the few lichens with such a widely
