Friedrich Wilhelm Zopf

German mycologist (1846-1909).

Friedrich (or Friederich) Wilhelm Zopf (12 December 1846 – 24 June 1909) was a German botanist and mycologist. He dedicated his career to fungal biology, particularly to classification of fungi and dye production of fungi and lichens. His 1890 textbook on fungi called “Die Pilze in morphologischer, physiologischer, biologischer und systematischer Beziehung (Translation: The mushrooms in morphological, physiological, biological and systematic relationship)” was an influential work in the field of mycology for many decades. The unicellular achlorophic microalgae Prototheca zopfii is named after

Pseudevernia furfuracea (Treemoss) (L.) Zopf 1903
fungi species in the parmeliaceae family
Pseudevernia furfuracea, commonly known as tree moss, is a lichenized species of fungus that grows on the bark of firs and pines. The lichen is rather sensitive to air pollution, its presence usually indicating good air conditions in the growing place. The species has numerous human uses, including use in perfume, embalming and in medicine. Large amounts of tree moss is annually processed in France for the perfume industry.
Peltigera praetextata (Scaly Pelt Lichen) (Flörke ex Sommerf.) Zopf 1909
fungi species in the peltigeraceae family
Peltigera praetextata, or the scaly dog pelt lichen, is a foliose lichen native to North America, Europe, and Asia. It is defined by small belly-button-like growths called phyllidia on its edges and centre.
Rhizoplaca (Rimmed Navel Lichens) Zopf 1905
fungi genus in the lecanoraceae family
Rhizoplaca is a genus of lichenized fungi in the family Lecanoraceae. Members of the genus are commonly called rimmed navel lichens because of their umbilicate growth form and lecanorine (rimmed with thallus-like tissue)apothecia, also rock-posy lichen and rockbright.
Pseudevernia (Light And Dark Lichen) Zopf 1903
fungi genus in the parmeliaceae family
Pseudevernia is a genus of foliose lichens in the family Parmeliaceae. The type species of the genus, Pseudevernia furfuracea (commonly known as tree moss), has substantial commercial value in the perfume industry.
Sphaerellothecium Zopf 1897
fungi genus in the mycosphaerellaceae family
Sphaerellothecium is a genus of fungi in the family Phyllachoraceae. All of the species in the genus are lichenicolous, meaning they grow parasitically on lichens.
Rhymbocarpus Zopf 1896
fungi genus in the cordieritidaceae family
Rhymbocarpus is a genus of lichenicolous (lichen-dwelling) fungi in the family Cordieritidaceae. It has 10 species. The genus was circumscribed by German mycologist Friedrich Wilhelm Zopf in 1896, with Rhymbocarpus punctiformis assigned as the type species.
Rhizoplaca chrysoleuca (Orange Rock-posy) (Sm.) Zopf 1905
fungi species in the lecanoraceae family
Rhizoplaca chrysoleuca (orange rim lichen, rock-posy lichen, rockbright) is a pale yellowish-green to gray-green umbilicate foiliose lichen in the Lecanoraceae (rim lichen) family. It was first described in 1791 by English botanist Sir James Edward Smith as Lichen chrysoleucus; Friedrich Wilhelm Zopf transferred it to the genus Rhizoplaca in 1905. The single-leaf (monophyllous) umbilicate thallus can be 2–3.5 cm in width, with deep lobes. The thallus is relatively thick and lumpy with warts and lobules. The fruiting structures (apothecia have lightly pruinose, burnt-orange to tan discs
Lichenosticta Zopf 1898
fungi genus
Lichenosticta is a genus of fungi of uncertain familial placement in the order Lecanorales. It has five species. All species are lichenicolous, meaning they are parasitic on lichens.

Thielavia Zopf 1876
fungi genus in the ceratocystidaceae family
Thielavia is a genus of fungi in the family Chaetomiaceae. Circumscribed by German botanist Friedrich Wilhelm Zopf in 1876, Thielavia is a teleomorph of Myceliophthora. Collectively, the genus is widely distributed, and according to a 2008 estimate, contained 31 species. Thielavia heterothallica and T. terrestris can cause infections in humans. The genus name of Thielavia is in honour of Friedrich Joachim Sigismund von Thielau (1796–1870), who was a German forester and landowner in Breslau.
Sphaerellothecium araneosum (Rehm ex Arnold) Zopf 1897
fungi species in the mycosphaerellaceae family
Sphaerellothecium araneosum is a species of lichenicolous fungus in the family Phyllachoraceae.
Pleopsidium chlorophanum (Gold Cobblestone Lichen) (Wahlenb.) Zopf 1895
fungi species in the acarosporaceae family
Pleopsidium chlorophanum (gold cobblestone lichen) is a distinctively colored, bright lemon-yellow to chartreuse crustose lichen, which favors dry arctic or alpine sandstone cliffs and boulders. It is a rare alpine lichen in Europe. It is in the genus Pleopsidium of the family Acarosporaceae. This lichen is one of the few species able to survive at high altitudes in Antarctica, at altitudes of up to 2,000 metres (6,600 ft). It is able to cope with high UV, low temperatures and dryness. In its Antarctic habitat, it can be found on the surface, but it is mainly found in cracks, where just a
