George Smith

British mycologist (1895-1967).

George Smith (15 December 1895 – 29 March 1967) was a British mycologist. Born in Great Harwood (Lancashire, England), he graduated from the University of Manchester in 1916 with first-class honours, and received his Master's degree in chemistry two years later. After starting a laboratory with the textile manufacturing company Boardman and Baron Ltd. in 1919, he began to study the mildew and moulds that grew on goods made from cotton. Smith began employment as a research assistant to Harold Raistrick in 1930 with the Biochemistry Department of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine,

Aspergillus restrictus G. Sm. 1931
fungi species in the aspergillaceae family
Aspergillus restrictus is a species of fungus in the genus Aspergillus. It is from the Restricti section. The species was first described in 1931. It is xerophilic, frequently found in house dust. Studies have suggested that it is an allergen implicated in asthma. In 2016, the genome of A. restrictus was sequenced as a part of the Aspergillus whole-genome sequencing project - a project dedicated to performing whole-genome sequencing of all members of the genus Aspergillus. The genome assembly size was 23.26 Mbp.
Penicillium raistrickii G. Sm. 1933
fungi species in the aspergillaceae family
Penicillium raistrickii is an anamorph species of fungus in the genus Penicillium which produces griseofulvin, patulin and verruculogen.
Aspergillus parvulus G. Sm. 1961
fungi species in the aspergillaceae family
Aspergillus parvulus is a species of fungus in the genus Aspergillus. It is from the Cervini section. The species was first described in 1961. It was isolated from soil in the United States and from feed ingredients in Argentina. A. parvulus has been reported to produce naphthalenones. The genome of A. parvulus was sequenced as a part of the Aspergillus whole-genome sequencing project - a project dedicated to performing whole-genome sequencing of all members of the genus Aspergillus. The genome assembly size was 32.73 Mbp.
Aspergillus funiculosus G. Sm. 1956
fungi species in the aspergillaceae family
Aspergillus funiculosus is an anamorph species of fungus in the genus Aspergillus. Aspergillus funiculosus produces the funiculolides A-D and the antibiotic funicin.
Aspergillus brevipes G. Sm. 1952
fungi species in the aspergillaceae family
Aspergillus brevipes is an anamorph species of fungus in the genus Aspergillus. It is from the Fumigati section. It was first described in 1952. It has been isolated from soil in Australia. Aspergillus brevipes produces roquefortine C, meleagrin and viriditoxin.
Aspergillus avenaceus G. Sm. 1943
fungi species in the aspergillaceae family
Aspergillus avenaceus is a species of fungus in the genus Aspergillus. It is from the Flavi section. The species was first described in 1943. A. avenaceus has been isolated in the UK from a Pisum sativum seed, and in the United States. It has been reported to produce avenaciolide and aspirochlorine.

fungi species in the aspergillaceae family
Penicillium madriti is an anamorph species of the genus of Penicillium which produces orsellinic acid.
Penicillium griseolum G. Sm. 1957
fungi species in the aspergillaceae family
Penicillium griseolum is an anamorph species of the genus of Penicillium.
