Italian botanist and politician (1765-1831).

Giovanni Battista Balbis (17 November 1765 – 3 February 1831) was an Italian botanist and politician who worked in Italy and France. He alternately was called Gioanni Battista Balbis and Jean-Baptiste Balbis. With French botanist Clémence Lortet and others, he co-founded the Linnean Society of Lyon. In 1804, botanist Antonio José Cavanilles, published Balbisia, which is a genus of flowering plants from southern South America, belonging to the family Francoaceae and was named in Giovanni Battista Balbis's honour.

Ciboria amentacea, commonly known as the catkin cup, is a species of ascomycete fungus in the family Sclerotiniaceae. It was first described by Giovanni Battista Balbis in 1804 as Peziza amentacea. Karl Wilhelm Gottlieb Leopold Fuckel transferred it to Ciboria in 1870. The cap is up to 1.2 centimetres (1⁄2 in) across. The species is widespread in Europe and North America, where it grows on catkins of willow and alder.
