Grégoire L. Hennebert

Belgian mycologist (1929–2021).

Grégoire Laurent Hennebert (20 June 1929 – 13 October 2021) was a Belgian plant pathologist and founding co-editor of the journal Mycotaxon. He was a prominent expert on the fungus genus Botyris and made significant contributions to the field of fungal nomenclature and taxonomy. Hennebert was a professor at University of Louvain and director of the Mycothèque de l’Université Catholique de Louvain (MUCL).

Phymatotrichopsis omnivora (Texas Root Rot) (Shear) Hennebert 1973
fungi species in the rhizinaceae family
Texas root rot (also known as Phymatotrichopsis root rot, Phymatotrichum root rot, cotton root rot, or, in the older literature, Ozonium root rot) is a disease that is fairly common in Mexico and the southwestern United States resulting in sudden wilt and death of affected plants, usually during the warmer months. It is caused by a soil-borne fungus named Phymatotrichopsis omnivora that attacks the roots of susceptible plants. It was first discovered in 1888 by Pammel and later named by Duggar in 1916. A monograph of this disease, which includes a historical review, was written by R.B.
Erynia (Nowak. ex A. Batko) Remaud. & Hennebert 1980
fungi genus in the entomophthoraceae family
Erynia is a genus of fungi within the family of Entomophthoraceae and order Entomophthorales. This has been supported by molecular phylogenetic analysis. The genus name Erynia was originally named by the Polish scientist Leon Nowakowski in 1881. It was named after the Greek mythological creatures known as the Erinyes or as the Romans called them, the Furies, who were described as spirits that claimed vengeance against a crime. It could be classed as an insect pest feeding on a plant, being a specific crime for which the fungus would kill the insect, thus exacting vengeance.

fungi species in the sclerotiniaceae family
Amphobotrys ricini is a species of fungus in the family Sclerotiniaceae. It is a plant pathogen that causes disease on several species including gray mold blight on Euphorbia milii and poinsettia. Originally described as a species of Botrytis in 1949, it was transferred to the genus Amphobotrys in 1973.
Ambrosiella Brader ex Arx & Hennebert 1965
fungi genus in the ceratocystidaceae family
Ambrosiella is a genus of ambrosia fungi within the family Ceratocystidaceae. It was circumscribed by mycologists Josef Adolph von Arx and Grégoire L. Hennebert in 1965 with Ambrosiella xylebori designated as the type species. All Ambrosiella species are obligate symbionts of ambrosia beetles. Several former species were moved to genera Raffaelea, Hyalorhinocladiella, or Phialophoropsis, and there were nine species recognized 2017. Twelve species in as of 2023. One species, Ambrosiella cleistominuta, has been observed to produce a fertile sexual state with cleistothecious ascomata.

Raffaelea is a genus of ambrosia fungi in the family Ophiostomataceae. It was circumscribed by mycologists Josef Adolph von Arx and Grégoire L. Hennebert in 1965 with Raffaelea ambrosiae as the type species. The genus is named in honor of Italian botanist Raffaele Ciferri. Laurel wilt is a disease of redbay (Persea borbonia) caused by Raffaelea lauricola. This fungus, harbored in the mycangium of the redbay ambrosia beetle Xyleborus glabratus, is in the form of a budding yeast in the mycangium and a filamentous fungus in galleries of the beetle. Several species also resident in the beetle
