Jochen Gartz

German chemist and mycologist.

Jochen Gartz (born 1 October, 1953) was a German chemist and mycologist who studied psilocybin mushrooms as well as other psychoactive plants. He was considered an expert in this field. Among other accomplishments, Gartz is known for discovering aeruginascin, which was originally thought to occur exclusively in Inocybe aeruginascens. He is also known for theorizing that an entourage effect may occur with the combination of different active alkaloids in psilocybin mushrooms besides just psilocybin and for reporting that baeocystin is active as a psychedelic in humans. He also wrote books about

Psilocybe azurescens (Flying Saucers) Stamets & Gartz 1995
fungi species in the hymenogastraceae family
Psilocybe azurescens—commonly known as the flying saucer mushroom, blue angel mushroom, or azure psilocybin mushroom—is a species of psychedelic mushroom whose main active compounds are psilocybin and psilocin. It is among the most potent of the tryptamine-bearing mushrooms, containing up to 1.8% psilocybin, 0.5% psilocin, and 0.4% baeocystin by dry weight, averaging to about 1.1% psilocybin and 0.15% psilocin. It belongs to the family Hymenogastraceae in the order Agaricales.
Psilocybe natalensis Gartz, D.A. Reid, M.T. Sm. & Eicker 1995
fungi species in the hymenogastraceae family
Psilocybe natalensis is a species of psilocybin mushroom in the family Hymenogastraceae. It is found in South Africa. The specific epithet refers to its type locality in Natal. The species was described as new to science in 1995 by Jochen Gartz, Derek Reid, Michael Smith, and Albert Eicker. It is very closely related to Psilocybe cubensis, and differs in its habitat preference, less persistent annulus and genetic sequence.
Psilocybe germanica Gartz & Wiedemann 2015
fungi species in the hymenogastraceae family
Psilocybe germanica is an invalidly described (Art. F.5.1. of the Code) species of psychedelic mushroom in the family Hymenogastraceae. It was described as a new species in 2015 by Jochen Gartz and Georg Wiedemann. DNA sequencing of the balls of P. germanica has found that it is a synonym of P. serbica.
