Julius Steiner (1844–1918) was an Austrian secondary-school teacher and lichenologist. He spent most of his career teaching at the k.k. Staatsgymnasium in Vienna's eighth district and became a Schulrat (school councillor). Trained in natural sciences with an emphasis on botany at the University of Vienna, he earned a doctorate and was later granted the title of professor. Catillaria nigroclavata (Catillaria Lichen) (Nyl.) J. Steiner 1898
fungi species in the catillariaceae family
Catillaria nigroclavata is a species of lichen belonging to the family Catillariaceae. It is mainly found in Europe and North America but it has also been reported from other continents. Catillaria nigroclavata is an epiphyte which grows on the bark of trees. A study from Greece reported the lichen from near the Fethiye mosque in Ipeiros and Kos Island where it was found growing on the species Pinus pinea and Robinia pseudacacia, on the latter of which it grew alongside the lichen Hyperphyscia adglutinata.
Verrucula J. Steiner 1896
fungi genus in the verrucariaceae family
Verrucula is a genus of lichenicolous (lichen-dwelling) lichens in the family Verrucariaceae. Species in the genus are parasitic on saxicolous (rock-dwelling), crustose lichens, including Xanthoria elegans as well as lichens from genus Caloplaca that contain chemical substances called anthraquinones.

Simonyella J. Steiner 1902
fungi genus in the roccellaceae family
Simonyella is a genus of lichenized fungi in the family Roccellaceae. A monotypic genus, it contains the single species Simonyella variegata J. Steiner (1902). The genus was circumscribed by Julius Steiner in Denkschr. Kaiserl. Akad. Wiss. Math.-Nat. Kl. vol.71: I, on page 96 in 1902. The genus name of Simonyella is in honour of Oscar Simony (1852–1915), who was an Austrian mathematician and mountaineer. He was Professor of Mathematics and Physics in Vienna.

These lichens form thin, tightly adhering crusts on rocks that reveal a bright orange colour when scraped, due to their algal partner. The genus was established in 1902 by the Austrian lichenologist Julius Steiner and comprises four species that produce distinctive elongated, slit-like fruiting bodies.
