Julius von Flotow

German lichenologist.

Julius von Flotow; full name- Julius Christian Gottlieb Ulrich Gustav Georg Adam Ernst Friedrich von Flotow (9 March 1788 – 15 August 1856) was a German military officer, botanist, lichenologist, and bryologist. Following a serious injury at the Battle of Lützen in 1813 that left his right arm partially paralysed, von Flotow developed his botanical interests during his convalescence and subsequent military service in France. After retiring from the Prussian cavalry in 1832, he settled in Hirschberg (now Jelenia Góra, Poland), where he advanced knowledge of the local lichen funga. His contribut

Cladonia arbuscula (Reindeer Lichen) (Wallr.) Flot. 1839
fungi species in the cladoniaceae family
Cladonia arbuscula, also referred to as shrubby cup lichen or green reindeer lichen, is a species of cup lichen in the family Cladoniaceae.
Anaptychia ciliaris (Great Ciliated Lichen) (L.) Flot. 1850
fungi species in the physciaceae family
Anaptychia ciliaris, commonly known as the great ciliated lichen or eagle's claws, is a species of fruticose lichen in the family Physciaceae. It is predominantly found in Northern Europe, with its range extending to European Russia, the Caucasus, Central and Southern Europe, the Canary Islands, and parts of Asia. First mentioned in botanical literature by the Italian botanist Fabio Colonna in 1606, the species was formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753, who highlighted its unique physical characteristics such as its grey colour, its unusual leafy form with linear fringe-like segments,
Phlyctis argena (Blemished Lichen) (Ach.) Flot. 1850
fungi species in the phlyctidaceae family
Phlyctis argena is a species of crustose lichen.
Diplotomma Flot. 1850
fungi genus in the caliciaceae family
Diplotomma is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Caliciaceae. The genus has a widespread distribution and contains 14 species. These lichens form firmly attached, crust-like patches that range from pale to dark grey and can appear smooth or cracked into an irregular mosaic pattern on their substrate. They produce black, disc-shaped fruiting bodies that start buried in the crust and later emerge to sit roughly flush with the surface, often dusted with a greyish-white powder.
Cladonia cervicornis (Browned Pixie-cup Lichen) (Ach.) Flot. 1849
fungi species in the cladoniaceae family
Cladonia cervicornis is a species of cup lichen in the family Cladoniaceae. It was first described by Swedish lichenologist Erik Acharius in 1799 as Lichen cervicornis. Julius von Flotow transferred it to the genus Cladonia in 1849. In North America, it is colloquially known as the ladder lichen or elk's-horn cup lichen.
Sarcogyne (Grain-spored Lichens) Flot. 1851
fungi genus in the acarosporaceae family
Sarcogyne is a genus of crustose lichen-forming fungi in the family Acarosporaceae. It was circumscribed by German botanist Julius von Flotow in 1850. A proposal has been put forth in 2021 to assign Sarcogyne clavus as the type species of the genus, "as it represents the original concept of Sarcogyne as having melanized lecideine apothecia without algae in the margin".
Phlyctis (Blemished Lichen) (Wallr.) Flot. 1850
fungi genus in the phlyctidaceae family
Phlyctis is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the order Gyalectales, and the type genus of the family Phlyctidaceae. Members of the genus are commonly called whitewash lichens. These parasitic lichens typically form very thin, patchy crusts on host surfaces or live almost entirely within their hosts, producing minute fruiting bodies that remain largely hidden beneath a coarse white pruina. The genus is characterised by spores that are densely divided by many walls into a net-like pattern and often have tiny points at their ends. Phlyctis contains about 20 species distributed worldwide, with
Catapyrenium (Earth Lichen) Flot. 1850
fungi genus in the verrucariaceae family
Catapyrenium is a genus of squamulose lichens in the family Verrucariaceae. These small lichens grow as clusters of tiny scales (squamules that lie flat against rocks and soil, often in dry or disturbed habitats. The genus includes about 18 species found worldwide, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions where they help stabilize soil surfaces.
Diplotomma alboatrum (Grayish Button Lichen) (Hoffm.) Flot. 1849
fungi species in the caliciaceae family
Diplotomma alboatrum is a species of lichen in the family Caliciaceae. It was first described as Lichen alboater by German lichenologist Georg Franz Hoffmann in 1784. Julius von Flotow transferred it to the genus Diplotomma in 1849. The lichen is widely distributed, and has been recorded in Europe, North America, and Australasia.
Catolechia Flot. 1850
fungi genus in the rhizocarpaceae family
Catolechia is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Rhizocarpaceae. It is a monotypic genus, containing the single species Catolechia wahlenbergii. The genus was circumscribed by the German botanist Julius von Flotow in 1850. He did not assign a type species for the genus; Catolechia pulchella A.Massal. (1852) was designated as the type by Gustav Wilhelm Körber in 1855. This species is synonymous with Catolechia wahlenbergii. Several species that were originally described as a member of Catolechia have since been transferred to other genera. Examples include: Catolechia flavovirescens
