Klaus Kalb

German lichenologist.

Klaus Kalb (born 1942) is a German lichenologist and an authority on tropical lichens. Born in Nuremberg, he studied at the University of Erlangen–Nuremberg before pursuing a career that significantly advanced the field of lichenology, particularly in Brazil. Kalb's work in São Paulo from 1978 to 1981 led to a collaboration with Brazilian lichenologist Marcelo Pinto Marcelli, which is considered a model for non-commercial benefit-sharing in taxonomic research. He later became an associate professor at the University of Regensburg and is known for editing the exsiccata series Lichenes Neotropic

Frutidella Kalb 1994
fungi genus in the lecanoraceae family
Frutidella is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Lecanoraceae. It contains three species. The genus was established in 1994 by Klaus Kalb to accommodate a species previously classified in the genus Lecidea. These lichens form thin crusts that often develop distinctive wart-like swellings packed with tiny granules, and they produce small, dome-shaped fruiting bodies with a characteristic blue-green sheen. Species of Frutidella typically grow on acidic substrates, including nutrient-poor soils in upland areas and the bark of trees.
Bulbothrix cinerea Marcelli & Kalb 2002
fungi species in the parmeliaceae family
Bulbothrix cinerea is a species of lichenized fungi within the family Parmeliaceae. Among other Bulbothrix species, only B. isidiza has isidia combined with an underside that is light coloured. B. isidiza's laciniae are wider, while its thallus is pale, and contains salazinic acid. In turn, B. ventricosa is larger and a black underside and rhizinae. The African species B. decurtata is an obligately saxicolous lichen, and while similar, it has a dark underside and produces salazinic acid in its medulla. The species' name thus refers to its uncommon dark gray colouration of its thallus.
Vainionora Kalb 1991
fungi genus in the lecanoraceae family
Vainionora is a genus of lichen in the family Lecanoraceae. The genus, which was circumscribed in 1991 by German lichenologist Klaus Kalb, honours the Finnish lichenologist Edvard Vainio, who described the type species as Lecanora pallidostraminea in 1890.

Chrysothrix xanthina (Common Gold-dust) (Vain.) Kalb 2001
fungi species in the chrysotrichaceae family
Chrysothrix xanthina is a widely distributed species of leprose lichen in the family Arthoniaceae. It has a bright yellow to bright greenish-yellow, thin, granular thallus, and typically grows on bark, although it is infrequently found growing on rock.
Carbacanthographis Staiger & Kalb 2002
fungi genus in the graphidaceae family
Carbacanthographis is a genus of corticolous (bark-dwelling) lichens in the family Graphidaceae. The genus was circumscribed by the German lichenologists Bettina Staiger and Klaus Kalb in 2002. An updated worldwide key to the genus was published in 2022 that added 17 new species. This revision allowed for further identification of undescribed species from other collections, and subsequently, 14 species were added in 2023 from the Amazonian lowland forests of Brazil and the Guianas.
Vainionora americana (American Speck) Kalb, Tønsberg & Elix 2004
fungi species in the lecanoraceae family
Vainionora americana is a species of crustose lichen in the family Lecanoraceae that is found in the United States. It was described as a species new to science in 2004 by the lichenologists Klaus Kalb, Tor Tønsberg, and John Alan Elix. The type was collected by Tønsberg from the southern Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina, where it was found growing on the bark of a maple tree. It was later recorded in Alabama. Vainionora americana has a crustose thallus that is greenish-gray in color, and soralia that are relatively large and convex. It produces atranorin and two xanthones as secondary
Topeliopsis acutispora Kalb 2001
fungi species in the graphidaceae family
Topeliopsis acutispora is a species of crustose lichen in the family Graphidaceae. It is found in New South Wales and southern Queensland (Australia), where it grows on bryophytes (i.e., mosses or liverworts).
Ramboldia russula (Red Heads) (Ach.) Kalb, Lumbsch & Elix 2008
fungi species in the ramboldiaceae family

Ramboldia gowardiana (T. Sprib. & M. Hauck) Kalb, Lumbsch & Elix 2008
fungi species in the ramboldiaceae family
Ramboldia gowardiana is a species of corticolous (bark-dwelling), crustose lichen in the family Ramboldiaceae. First discovered in 2003 in Montana, United States, it typically appears as a grayish or greenish crust on tree bark, particularly on conifers like pines and firs. The lichen is characterised by its small, bright red to orange-red reproductive structures (apothecia) visible on its surface. R. gowardiana is found in dry, temperate forests from Alaska to California, often at elevations between 300 and 1,400 meters (about 980 to 4,600 feet). Initially classified in a different genus, it
Pyxine profallax Kalb 2009
fungi species in the caliciaceae family
Pyxine profallax is a species of corticolous (bark-dwelling), foliose lichen in the family Caliciaceae. It is found in Australia, Papua New Guinea, and Thailand.
Pallidogramme Staiger, Kalb & Lücking 2008
fungi genus in the graphidaceae family
Pallidogramme is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Graphidaceae. It has 8 species of corticolous (bark-dwelling), crustose lichens.
Malmidea Kalb, Rivas Plata & Lumbsch 2011
fungi genus in the malmideaceae family
Malmidea is a genus of crustose lichens and the type genus of the family Malmideaceae. It was established in 2011 to contain a phylogenetically distinct group of species formerly placed in the genus Malcolmiella. The crust-like thallus of Malmidea lichens has a surface that varies from smooth to rough, featuring textures such as verrucose (wart-like), granulose (grainy), or pustulate (pimpled). These textures are often formed by goniocysts, which are spherical clusters of green algal cells from the family Chlorococcaceae, encased in fungal hyphae. Malmidea comprises nearly 70 mostly tropical

Anomalographis Kalb 1992
fungi genus in the graphidaceae family
Anomalographis is a genus of two species of lichen-forming fungi in the family Graphidaceae. These lichens form pale grey to yellow-brown crusts and are characterized by elongated, slit-like fruiting bodies containing very small spores divided by a single internal wall. One species grows on shaded volcanic rock faces in Madeira, while the other was discovered growing on tree bases in northeastern Queensland rainforest, showing the genus can colonize both rock and bark surfaces in humid, shaded environments.
