Ludwig Emanuel Schaerer

Swiss botanist (1785-1853).

Ludwig Emanuel Schaerer (11 June 1785 – 3 February 1853) was a Swiss pastor and lichenologist. Interested in natural history from a young age, Schaerer trained as a teacher and studied theology in Bern. During his career as a teacher, orphanage director, and pastor, he researched extensively and maintained correspondence with foreign botanists interested in cryptogams. Schaerer was best known for his multi-volume work Lichenum Helveticorum Spicilegium ("Anthology of Swiss Lichens"), published in 12 parts from 1823 to 1842. This series catalogued and described the lichens of Switzerland, partic

Thamnolia vermicularis (Whiteworm Lichen) (Sw.) Schaer. 1850
fungi species in the icmadophilaceae family
Thamnolia vermicularis, the whiteworm lichen, is the traditional name applied to a widespread, morphologically uniform group of fruticose lichens in the family Icmadophilaceae. The species forms loose mats or scattered tufts of slender, worm-like, chalky-white branches that typically reach up to 5 cm long, growing on tundra terrain across arctic and alpine habitats. It was first described in 1781 by the Swedish botanist Olof Swartz from the alpine regions of Lapland, and the modern scientific name was formalized by Ludwig Schaerer in 1850. Material traditionally identified as T. vermicularis
Cladonia bellidiflora (Toy Soldiers) (Ach.) Schaer. 1823
fungi species in the cladoniaceae family
Cladonia bellidiflora or the toy soldiers cup lichen is a fruticose, cup lichen species in the Cladoniaceae family.
Cladonia rei (Wand Lichen) Schaer. 1823
fungi species in the cladoniaceae family
Cladonia rei, commonly known as the wand lichen, is a species of ground-dwelling, fruticose lichen in the family Cladoniaceae. It is a widely distributed species, having been reported from Africa, Asia, Australasia, Europe, and North America. It is identified by its slightly dirty-colored, rough-surfaced, slender podetia that grow up to 9 cm (3.5 in) tall. Diagnostic characters of the lichen include the continuously sorediate, green-and-brown-mottled, podetia that taper upward to a point, while chemically, it contains homosekikaic and sekikaic acids. Its reduced capacity to bioaccumulate
Cladonia pleurota (Red-fruited Pixie Cup) (Flörke) Schaer. 1850
fungi species in the cladoniaceae family
Cladonia pleurota is a species of fruticose, cup lichen in the family Cladoniaceae. It was first formally described as a new species by German lichenologist Heinrich Gustav Flörke in 1808 as Capitularia pleurota. Ludwig Emanuel Schaerer transferred it to the genus Cladonia in 1850. In North America, it is known colloquially as the red-fruited pixie cup or the red-fruited cup lichen.
Thamnolia (White Worm Lichens) Ach. ex Schaer. 2013
fungi genus in the icmadophilaceae family
Thamnolia is a genus of lichens in the family Icmadophilaceae. Members of the genus are commonly called whiteworm lichens. Two species of Thamnolia are used by ethnic peoples of Yunnan Province (China) as a component of purported health-promoting tea: Thamnolia vermicularis, and T. subuliformis.
Cladonia cenotea (Powdered Funnel Lichen) (Ach.) Schaer. 1823
fungi species in the cladoniaceae family
Cladonia cenotea or the powdered cup lichen is a species of cup lichen in the family Cladoniaceae. It was first described by Erik Acharius in 1823. It grows on the north side of rotting wood or stumps in shaded areas.
Cladonia amaurocraea (Quill Lichen) (Flörke) Schaer. 1887
fungi species in the cladoniaceae family
Cladonia amaurocraea, commonly known as the quill lichen or the quill cup lichen, is a species of fruticose, cup lichen in the family Cladoniaceae.
Umbilicaria virginis (Blushing Rock Tripe) Schaer. 1842
fungi species in the umbilicariaceae family
Umbilicaria virginis, commonly known as the blushing rock tripe, is a species of saxicolous (rock-dwelling) umbilicate lichen in the family Umbilicariaceae. It occurs in polar and alpine regions.

Lecidea atrobrunnea (Brown Tile Lichen) (DC.) Schaer. 1828
fungi species in the lecideaceae family
Lecidea atrobrunnea is a group of lichen-forming fungi in the family Lecideaceae. Previously though to represent a single, widely distributed crustose lichen, recent research has shown that the name represents many unique lineages of morphologically and chemically variable lichen-forming fungi that have not yet been precisely characterized. Members of this group are most diverse in mountains of the continental western United States and Alaska. With other lichen communities, it forms dark vertical drip-like stripings along drainage tracks in the rock faces, resulting in Native Americans giving
