Otto Vernon Darbishire

English botanist, phycologist, and mycologist (1870-1934).

Otto Vernon Darbishire (16 March 1870 – 17 October 1934) was a British botanist who specialised in marine algae and lichens. He served as a lecturer at several institutions, including the universities of Manchester, Newcastle, and Bristol, where he became the first Melville Wills Professor of Botany. Darbishire was recognised for his contributions to lichenology, particularly his taxonomic work on the genus Roccella. He was elected a Fellow of the Linnean Society in 1920 and served as president of the British Mycological Society and the Bristol Naturalists' Society. Several lichen species have

Dendrographa Darb. 1895
fungi genus in the roccellaceae family
Dendrographa is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Roccellaceae. It has seven species. These lichens form small, shrubby tufts that cling to bark or coastal rocks along the Pacific seaboard, with brown-grey main branches and paler, pencil-thin tips that lack a protective outer skin. The genus was originally established in 1895 for a single Pacific coast species, but molecular studies in the 2010s expanded it by transferring four additional species from other genera and led to the discovery of a seventh species in Brazil.
Roccellina (Southern Litmus Lichens) Darb. 1898
fungi genus in the roccellaceae family
Roccellina is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Roccellaceae.
Pannoparmelia (Müll. Arg.) Darb. 1912
fungi genus in the parmeliaceae family
Pannoparmelia is a genus of lichenised ascomycetes in the large family Parmeliaceae. It is a genus of five currently accepted species of foliose lichens.
Ingaderia Darb. 1897
fungi genus in the opegraphaceae family
Ingaderia is a genus of lichen-forming fungi in the family Opegraphaceae. Species in this genus form pale, crusty patches that often crack when thick, and produce elongated fruiting bodies that appear as narrow slits on the surface. The genus was originally established with a single species from South America, but molecular studies published in 2023 expanded its scope to include several species previously classified in other genera such as Llimonaea and Paraingaderia. Species are distinguished by their thick, dark fruiting body walls, elongated ascospores divided by cross-walls, and the

Buellia frigida Darb. 1910
fungi species in the caliciaceae family
Buellia frigida is a species of saxicolous (rock-dwelling), crustose lichen in the family Caliciaceae. It was first described from samples collected from the British National Antarctic Expedition of 1901–1904. It is endemic to maritime and continental Antarctica, where it is common and widespread, at altitudes up to about 2,000 m (6,600 ft). The characteristic appearance of this lichen features shades of grey and black divided into small polygonal patterns. The crusts can generally grow up to 7 cm (2+3⁄4 in) in diameter (smaller sizes are more common), although neighbouring individuals may
Roccellodea Darb. 1932
fungi genus in the roccellaceae family
Roccellodea is a genus of lichenized fungi in the family Roccellaceae; according to the 2007 Outline of Ascomycota, the placement in this family is uncertain. A monotypic genus, it contains the single species Roccellodea nigerrima.
