William Jackson Hooker

English botanist and botanical illustrator (1785-1865).

William Jackson Hooker (6 July 1785 – 12 August 1865) was an English botanist and botanical illustrator, who became the first director of Kew when in 1841 it was recommended to be placed under state ownership as a botanic garden. At Kew he founded the Herbarium and enlarged the gardens and arboretum. The standard author abbreviation Hook. is used to indicate this person as the author when citing a botanical name. Hooker was born and educated in Norwich. An inheritance gave him the means to travel and to devote himself to the study of natural history, particularly botany. He published his accou

Geastrum fornicatum (Arched Earthstar) (Huds.) Hook. 1821
fungi species in the geastraceae family
Geastrum fornicatum, commonly known as the acrobatic earthstar or the arched earthstar, is an inedible species of mushroom in the family Geastraceae. Like other earthstar mushrooms, the thick outer skin splits open at maturity, exposing the spore sac to the elements. It is found in the southwest United States.

Ophiocordyceps robertsii (Vegetable Caterpillar) (Hook.) G.H. Sung, J.M. Sung, Hywel-Jones & Spatafora 2007
fungi species in the ophiocordycipitaceae family
Ophiocordyceps robertsii, known in New Zealand as vegetable caterpillar (Māori: āwhato or āwheto) is an entomopathogenic fungus belonging to the order Hypocreales (Ascomycota) in the family Ophiocordycipitaceae. It invades the caterpillars of leaf-litter dwelling moths and turns them into fungal mummies, sending up a fruiting spike above the forest floor to shed its spores. Caterpillars eat the spores as they feed on leaf litter, completing the fungal life cycle. Evidence of this fungus can be seen when small brown stems push through the forest floor: underneath are the dried remains of the

Lysurus periphragmoides (Klotzsch ex Hook.) Dring 1980
edible fungi species in the phallaceae family
Lysurus periphragmoides, commonly known as the stalked lattice stinkhorn or chambered stinkhorn, is a species of fungus in the stinkhorn family. It was originally described as Simblum periphragmoides in 1831, and has been known as many different names before being transferred to Lysurus in 1980. The fruit body, which can extend up to 15 cm (6 in) tall, consists of a reddish latticed head (a receptaculum) placed on top of a long stalk. A dark olive-green spore mass, the gleba, fills the interior of the lattice and extends outwards between the arms. Like other members of the family Phallaceae,

fungi species in the parmeliaceae family
Masonhalea richardsonii, known as Richardson's masonhalea lichen or the arctic tumbleweed, is a fruticose lichen found mainly in Northern ecosystems. It is known as the arctic tumbleweed because when dry, it curls up and is spread by wind across the open tundra. It has a unique brown colouration with white netting patterns.
Lobariella pallida (Hook.) B. Moncada & Lücking 2011
fungi species in the lobariaceae family
Lobariella pallida is a species of corticolous (bark-dwelling), foliose lichen in the family Peltigeraceae. It was first formally described in 1822 by English botanist William Jackson Hooker, as a member of the genus Sticta. Bibiana Moncada and Robert Lücking transferred it to the genus Lobariella in 2011. The lichen occurs in páramo regions of Central and South America, where it grows on twigs and thin stems of shrubs and small trees. It is the most common species in its genus. Although it typically grows in association with other lichens, its quite loose attachment to its substrate means it
