Mudd, william (1829–1879), lichenologist.

William Mudd (1829 - 1879) compiled the first flora of the lichens of the British Isles, in 1861. He was curator of Cambridge Botanic Garden in 1864.

Buellia disciformis, the boreal button lichen, is a thin, bluish to pale gray rimose to areolate crustose lichen that grows on bark (rarely also on wood) in temperate forests in the northern USA and Europe, and at high altitudes in Arizona, down to 500 metres (1,600 ft) in coastal areas of California. Flat apothecia with black discs are .2-.7 mm in diameter and sessile (neither raised or immersed in the thallus), with noticeable lecideine margins. Cercidospora epipolytropa is a species of lichenicolous fungus in the genus Cercidospora but it has not been assigned to a family. It is known to parasitise the crustose lichen Lecanora polytropa. The fungus was first formally described by mycologist William Mudd in 1861. Ferdinand Christian Gustav Arnold transferred it to Cercidospora in 1874.

Muellerella ventosicola is a species of lichenicolous fungus in the family Verrucariaceae. It shows preference to growing on species of the genus Rhizocarpon but can also associate with other genera. Muellerella ventosicola has been reported growing on Rhizocarpon geographicum in Iceland, Sicily and in Ukraine, on Rhizocarpon grande in Ukraine and an unknown Rhizocarpon species in the Tatra Mountains of Poland. It has also been reported on the genera Ophioparma and Protoparmelia.
