Alan Cyril Crundwell (13 March 1923 – 20 August 2000) was a British bryologist, known for categorizing approximately 20 species of bryophytes, around six of which were previously unknown to science. He spent most of his professional life at the University of Glasgow, in Scotland.

Pohlia scotica, commonly known as Scottish threadmoss, is a moss endemic to Scotland. The earliest records date to 1964 and this moss was recognised as a distinct species in 1982. The largest populations are in Argyll with smaller populations in Dunbartonshire and Easter Ross. Its favoured habitat is silt, sand and gravel subject to regular inundation. The species has been provisionally classified as Lower Risk (Near threatened) and receives protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

Herbertus borealis is a species of liverwort in the family Herbertaceae known as northern prongwort. It was described in 1970 by Alan Crundwell. It is endemic to Scotland, where it is found only in the Beinn Eighe nature reserve, and lives in dwarf shrub heath alongside other large liverworts such as Anastrophyllum donnianum, Bazzania tricrenata and Pleurozia purpurea. A closely related species, described in 2012 as Herbertus norenus and known as "Viking prongwort", is known from Shetland and Norway and was formerly confused with H. borealis. Didymodon mamillosus, commonly known as Perthshire beardmoss, is a species of moss endemic to Europe. It occurs at only five sites including one in Scotland where it is classified as "Critically Endangered". The other sites are in Iceland, Germany, the Czech Republic and in north-east Spain. Named as a new species by Alan Crundwell in 1967, the Scottish site at Kirkton Glen in Perthshire was found again in 1998 by Nick Hodgetts. Jan Kucera, working in Bohemia considers it to be a form of D. rigidulus.
