Berthold Stein

German botanist (1847–1899).

Berthold Stein (1847–1899) was a Prussian botanist and lichenologist. After working as a disciple at the Botanical Garden in Berlin in 1865 he became superintendent at the Innsbruck Botanical Garden. He held this position from 1873 to 1880, during which he also started to collect lichens. From 1880 to 1890 he was royal superintendent at the University of Wrocław Botanical Garden. Based on a quote in 1879 by Stein himself he can be considered as a student of Gustav Körber. His main area of interest was the flora of Silesia. He worked extensively on the taxonomy of the genera Masdevallia, Pescat

It blooms with tall inflorescence of up to six large flowers that are 5-13 inches. It is unique to the Corypetalum group for holding its petals almost horizontally, giving the flower a distinctive appearance. The peak flowering period of this plant is from April to May.
Paphiopedilum purpuratum (Purple Paphiopedilum) (Lindl.) Stein 1892

Paphiopedilum purpuratum is a species of orchids found from southern China to Hainan Island. The species was discovered on Hong Kong Island in 1850. This forest species is Critically Endangered in the wild, with an estimated global population of fewer than 250 individuals. The main causes of ongoing decline are habitat loss and degradation.

endangered and perennial plant species in the orchidaceae family
Paphiopedilum niveum is a species of orchid occurring from peninsular Thailand to peninsular Malaysia. It is best known on Pulau Langkawi, a group of islands off the coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Over-collecting from these islands has made the species quite scarce. This orchid grows in cracks on limestone cliffs just above sea level. It is small, only 10 cm across, with flowers that are 5–6 cm across. It flowers from December to August, peaking in April and May. This orchid, and the Thai variety, Paph. niveum var. Ang Thong, have been hybridised extensively, and are easy to grow.

critically endangered and perennial plant species in the orchidaceae family
Paphiopedilum druryi is a species of orchid endemic to the Agastyamalai Hills of southern India. It is the only southern Indian orchid species in the genus. Rediscovered in 1972 after its original description in 1870, wild populations were decimated by commercial collectors and it is one of the few plants that are listed as threatened by the Indian government and included in CITES and the IUCN Redlist. The species was described by Colonel Richard Henry Beddome in 1870 and named after the collector of the first specimens, Colonel Heber Drury (1819-1905), an amateur botanist who worked in

endangered and perennial plant species in the orchidaceae family
Paphiopedilum callosum is a species of slipper orchid found from Indochina to northern Peninsular Malaysia. Various hybrids forms are successfully cultivated, although its cultivation is considered to be difficult. It has been investigated and shown promising results in the treatment of cancer.
Paphiopedilum villosum (Villose Paphiopedilum) (Lindl.) Stein 1892
vulnerable plant species in the orchidaceae family
Paphiopedilum villosum is a species of orchid found Assam, southern China and the Myanmar states of Kachin, Kayar, Shan and the Upper Sagaing region. The population is declining across its range and the species is listed as vulnerable by the IUCN due to habitat degradation and poaching for the global plant trade.

critically endangered and perennial plant species in the orchidaceae family
Paphiopedilum sanderianum is a rare species of orchid endemic to northwestern Borneo (Gunung Mulu). First discovered in 1885 by F. Sander's collector, J. Foerstermann, the orchid became renowned for the remarkable length of its petals, which can measure over 1 m long. The largest in recent times was one grown in 1999 by Dr. John M. Doherty with petals 90 cm long. Although P. sanderianum has been used as a parent in a number of crosses, none of the resulting hybrids have so far matched the extraordinary lengths of this species' petals. However, soon after the turn of the 20th century, this
