Daniel Lee Nickrent (born 1956) is an American botanist, working in plant evolutionary biology, including the subdisciplines of genomics, phylogenetics, systematics, population genetics, and taxonomy. A major focus has been parasitic flowering plants, particularly of the sandalwood order (Santalales). Rafflesia verrucosa (R. Verrucosa) Balete, Pelser, Nickrent & Barcelona 2010
perennial plant species in the rafflesiaceae family
Rafflesia verrucosa was first identified and characterized during a small mammal survey of Mt. Kampalili in eastern Mindanao in 2010. R. verrucosa is the tenth species of Rafflesia found in the Philippines. Rafflesia species have rare and unusual flowers known for their large size and pungent smell. Some plant enthusiasts like Frits W. Went have gone to extreme measures to see these plants in bloom. Went detailed his search for Rafflesia saying, "I had heard, when I was in Java many years ago, that Rafflesia were to be found on an offshore island named Nusah Kembangan. This was in 1929, when
Hondurodendron C.Ulloa, Nickrent, Whitef. & D.L.Kelly 2010
plant genus in the olacaceae family
Hondurodendron is a monotypic genus of tree endemic to Honduras. The only species in the genus, H. urceolatum, was discovered during 2004 and 2006 botanical surveys of plants in Parque Nacional El Cusuco in northwest Honduras. It was subsequently described in 2010 by Carmen Ulloa Ulloa, Daniel L. Nickrent, Caroline Whitefoord, and Daniel L. Kelly in the Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden. The genus is placed in the family Olacaceae, when the family is circumscribed as in the APG IV system. Other sources place it in the segregate family Aptandraceae. Photographs of this species can be

Staufferia capuronii Z.S.Rogers, Nickrent & Malécot 2008
vulnerable plant species in the santalaceae family
Staufferia is a monotypic genus of flowering plants belonging to the family Santalaceae. It just contains one species, Staufferia capuronii Z.S.Rogers, Nickrent & Malécot It is native to Madagascar. The genus name of Staufferia is in honour of Hans Ulrich Stauffer (1929–1965), a Swiss botanist who traveled in South Africa, Australia and New Guinea; specialist in Santalaceae. The Latin specific epithet of capuronii is in honor of the French botanist René Capuron. Both the genus and the species were first described and published in Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. Vol.95 on pages 394-395 in 2008.
Arceuthobium siskiyouense (Knobcone Pine Dwarf-mistletoe) Hawksw., Wiens & Nickrent 1992
plant species in the santalaceae family
Arceuthobium siskiyouense is a species of dwarf mistletoe commonly known as knobcone pine dwarf mistletoe and as Arceuthobium campylopodum subsp. siskiyouense. It is endemic to the Klamath Mountains of northern California and southern Oregon, where it parasitizes a number of species of hard pines in the subgenus Pinus. Its ecological impact on the coniferous forests where it is found is significant, both because of its negative impact on the health of infected trees and because it provides food and microhabitats (by inducing witch's brooms) for other wildlife.
Arceuthobium monticola (Western White Pine Dwarf Mistletoe) Hawksw., Wiens & Nickrent 1992
plant species in the santalaceae family
Arceuthobium monticola is a species of dwarf mistletoe known as western white pine dwarf mistletoe. It is a small shrub that grows on and parasitizes a small number of conifer species, primarily western white pines (Pinus monticola). It is endemic to the Klamath Mountains of northern California and southern Oregon, which has been identified as a major center of dwarf mistletoe biodiversity. This species impacts the ecology of coniferous forests significantly, negatively affecting the health of host trees but also creating valuable microhabitats for wildlife by inducing witch's brooms.
Arceuthobium littorum (Coastal Dwarf Mistletoe) Hawksw., Wiens & Nickrent 1992
plant species in the santalaceae family
Arceuthobium littorum is a species of dwarf mistletoe known as coastal dwarf mistletoe. It is a endemic to the coastline of northern California, where it lives as a parasite on Bishop pine and Monterey pine trees, and occasionally on Bolander's pine. This species significantly impacts the ecology of coastal pine forests, negatively affecting the health of host trees but providing important habitat and food for other organisms.
