It is named after the Montezuma area in the Tatamá National Natural Park in the departments of Chocó and Risaralda. It is a pseudobulbous epiphyte and grows on roadside banks in páramo at elevations of 1,600 to 2,500 m (5,200 to 8,200 ft).

Gongylis is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the family Brassicaceae. It includes a single species, Gongylis peruviana, a perennial or subshrub endemic to Lima Department in western Peru. It inhabits high elevations in the central Andes from 4,500 to 4,800 meters elevation, where it grows in loose rocky soils which freeze and thaw frequently. It is locally rare and known from fewer than ten locations. It is threatened by habitat degradation from mining activities, and is assessed as endangered by the IUCN Red List.

Molinari, J.S.Raju & Mayta – Himalayas and southern China Vuhuangia penduliflora (W.W.Sm.) Mayta, J.S.Raju & Molinari – south-central China (Yunnan) and northern Vietnam The genus was described in 2016. The generic name combines the surnames of Wu Cheng-Yi and Huang Shu-Chung, Chinese botanists and Lamiaceae students.
