The plant apparently originated as a cross between the two very widespread species T. latifolia and T. laxmannii. Typha × smirnovii grows in freshwater marshes.

Typha joannis is a plant species native to Mongolia and Amur. The species grows in freshwater marshes and on the banks of lakes and rivers.
