Fred Alexander Barkley (1908–1989) was an American botanist. Barkley studied at the University of Oklahoma and was awarded a PhD from the Washington University in St. Louis in 1937.

The trees are cultivated and tapped for their toxic sap, which is used as a highly durable lacquer to make Chinese, Japanese, and Korean lacquerware. The leaflets are obovate, with rounded tips, tapering bases and irregularly toothed margins. The flowers are tiny, yellowish and fragrant. The fruit is small, round and red when ripe. Its native range is Western South America and it is found in Bolivia, Colombia and Venezuela.
