Friedrich Ritter

German botanist and geologist (1898-1989).

Friedrich Ritter (9 May 1898 – 9 April 1989) was a German botanist who collected and described many species of cacti. Ritterocereus is named in his honour. Friedrich Ritter studied biology, geology and paleontology at the University of Marburg. In 1920, before completing his studies, he emigrated to Mexico with his parents. In Mexico he worked for various mining companies. During this time he began to deal more intensively with cacti. From 1930 he undertook study trips to Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Brazil and Chile. From 1937 to 1952 he lived in Germany and also served in the German Wehrmacht.

Cumulopuntia F.Ritter 1980
plant genus in the cactaceae family
Cumulopuntia is a genus of cactus (family Cactaceae). This is a poorly defined genus, with constant change to what species fall under it and whether it should even be a separate genus from Opuntia, which it is often interchanged with. It was defined by Friedrich Ritter in 1980 by redefining multiple species in Tephrocactus and Opuntia. Still more work needs to be done to circumscribe Cumulopuntia as it stands.
Cipocereus F.Ritter 1979
plant genus in the cactaceae family
Cipocereus is a genus of cacti from Brazil. These species were previously included in the genera Pilosocereus and Cereus.
Cereeae F.Ritter 1979
plant tribe in the cactaceae family
Cereeae is a tribe of cacti belonging to the subfamily Cactoideae containing about 50 genera, divided in 2023 among six subtribes.
Calymmanthium substerile F.Ritter 1962
plant species in the cactaceae family
Calymmanthium is a monotypic genus of primitive tree-like cacti from northern Peru. The only species is Calymmanthium substerile (also known as C. fertile). It belongs to the tribe Lymanbensonieae. The young flowers of Calymmanthium are completely encased within the plant's pedicel until it is fully developed, at which time the growing yellow flower swells until it cracks the pedicel open, allowing pollinators access. The plant has an upright trunk, but many of the branches sprawl on the ground. Diploperianthium F.Ritter (nom. inval.) has been brought into synonymy with this genus.
