George Gardner

British scientist (1812-1849).

George Gardner (1810, Ardentinny – 1849, Kandy) was a Scottish biologist mainly interested in botany. Gardner's father was a gardener first to the Earl of Dunmore in Ardentinny, then from 1816 to the Earl of Eglinton at Ardrossan. In 1822, his parents moved to Glasgow where he attended the grammar-school and acquired a good knowledge of the Latin language. He began the study of medicine in the Andersonian university of Glasgow in 1829, eventually becoming a surgeon. In 1836, encouraged by the famed botanist William Jackson Hooker, he brought out an exsiccata work entitled Musci Britannici,

Triuridaceae (Triuris Family) Gardner 1843
plant family in the order pandanales
Triuridaceae are a family of tropical and subtropical flowering plants, including nine genera with a total of approximately 55 known species. All members lack chlorophyll and are mycoheterotrophic (obtain food by digesting intracellular fungi, often erroneously called 'saprophytes'). The heterotrophic lifestyle of these plants has resulted in a loss of xylem vessels and stomata, and a reduction of leaves to scales. The flowers of Triuridaceae have tepals which are fused at the base and contain 10 to many free carpels.

It was originally published and described by George Gardner in 1842. Its habitat is reported as being restricted to the water-filled leaf axils of bromeliads in the genus Vriesea in arid volcanic locations at altitudes from 800 m (2,625 ft) to 2,200 m (7,200 ft). U. nelumbifolia will produce aerial stolons that descend into nearby leaf axils in order to colonize new territory, similar to the habit of U. humboldtii. It typically flowers from May to
Schima superba (Schima) Gardner & Champ. 1849
medicinal plant species in the theaceae family
Schima superba is a species of flowering plant in the tea family Theaceae, native to subtropical areas of Vietnam, southern China, Hainan, Taiwan, and the Ryukyu Islands. S. superba has a long history; in China, it has been described as early as in the "Classic of Mountains and Seas", and it is one of the "sacred trees" in this classic text. S. superba is a precious and multi-purpose tree species.

Cattleya walkeriana ((walker's Cattleya) Gardner 1843
plant species in the orchidaceae family
Cattleya walkeriana, or Walker's cattleya, is a species of orchid. It differs from most species of Cattleya by having inflorescences which arise from the rhizome instead of from the apex of the pseudobulb. In its native habitat (the Brazilian Central Plateau) it grows as either an epiphyte or a lithophyte, sometimes in full sun, at elevations up to 2000 meters. Pseudobulbs are relatively short, bulbous or fusiform, with one or two ovate leaves at the apex. Inflorescence is one- or few-flowered, about 8 in (20 cm) tall. Flowers are 4–5 in (10–13 cm) across. Genetically, C. walkeriana is close
