The specific epithet (pedleyanus) honours Leslie Pedley, "Assistant Director of the Queensland Herbarium"', who supplied the authors with Ptilotus material. Ptilotus pedleyanus grows on breakaways, and other stony hills between Winton, Aramac and Quilpie with Acacia catenulata and species of Eremophila.
