It is the wild progenitor of the cultivated chickpea (Cicer arietinum) and is found primarily near Savur in the Mardin district. The species is characterised by its prostrate growth habit, distinctive reticulated seed surface pattern, and strong genetic compatibility with domestic chickpeas.
