Helmut Gams

Austrian botanist (1893-1976).

Helmut Gams (1893–1976) was a central European botanist. Born in Brno, he moved to Zürich as a child. He studied at the University of Zurich, being awarded a PhD in 1918. During his career, he worked at the University of Munich and the University of Innsbruck. His research saw him pursue fieldwork around Europe and Asia. He was a geobotanist who specialized in the associations of different species of mosses and lichens with each other and the environment. Gams coined the terms 'biocoenology' and 'phytocoenology' in his 1918 PhD thesis. Two species named after Gams are Phacus gamsii and Rumex g

Viola × wittrockiana (Pansy) Gams 1925
plant hybrid species in the violaceae family
The garden pansy (Viola × wittrockiana) is a type of polychromatic large-flowered hybrid plant cultivated as a garden flower. It is derived by hybridization from several species in the section Melanium ("the pansies") of the genus Viola, particularly V. tricolor, a wildflower of Europe and western Asia known as heartsease. It is sometimes known as V. tricolor var. hortensis, but this scientific name is suspect. While V. tricolor var. hortensis Groenland & Rümpler is a synonym of Viola × wittrockiana, V. tricolor var. hortensis DC. refers to a horticultural variety of wild pansy (V. tricolor
Salvia officinalis ssp. lavandulifolia (Spanish Sage) (Vahl) Gams 1927
plant subspecies in the lamiaceae family
Salvia officinalis subsp. lavandulifolia, synonym Salvia lavandulifolia, (Spanish sage) is a small woody herbaceous perennial native to Spain and southern France, growing in rocky soil in Maquis shrubland, often found growing with rosemary, Lavandula lanata, and Genista cinerea. S. officinalis subsp. lavandulifolia grows 30 centimetres (1 ft) tall and wide, with a reclining habit and narrow, lanceolate, whitish-gray evergreen leaves that are less than 50 mm (2 in) long. The leaves grow opposite each other on the stem and appear to grow in bunches. When the leaves are rubbed, oils give off a

plant subspecies in the sapindaceae family
Bosnian maple (Acer opalus subsp. obtusatum), also known as Balkan maple, is a subspecies of Acer opalus in the soapberry family Sapindaceae. It is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree native to the mountains and hills of south central and southeastern Europe and parts of North Africa, where it grows mainly on limestone slopes and in mixed broadleaf woodland. The common name “Bosnian maple” refers both to this taxon and, in the timber trade, to high quality maple wood from the western Balkans used in string instrument making, which usually derives from the related species Acer
