John Clayton

American colonial botanist (1694-1773).

John Clayton (1694/5–1773) was an Anglican clergyman, a clerk, and a botanist in the Colony of Virginia. He may be confused with several distant family members, including Rev. John Clayton who served as minister at Jamestown (1682–1684) and conducted various scientific experiments, before returning to England (although his papers and specimens were lost at sea during that voyage).

Agastache is a genus of aromatic flowering herbaceous perennial plants in the family Lamiaceae. It contains 22 species, mainly native to North America, one species native to eastern Asia. The common names of the species are a variety of fairly ambiguous and confusing "hyssops" and "mints"; as a whole the genus is known as giant hyssops or hummingbird mints.

Melanthium is a genus of herbaceous perennial plants native to North America. They are closely related to Veratrum, and in fact are included in that genus by some authors. The distinction between Melanthium and Veratrum is based on various morphological traits, but it is not yet clear where the line is best drawn. They contain alkaloids similar to those found in Veratrum and are thus assumed to be poisonous.
