Described by English born dentist and botanist Leonard Rodway, that which distinguishes G. abscida the most from all other species of Gleichenia is its frond. While each other species of Gleichenia have a repetitively branching frond, G. abscida's frond consists of just two blades, with the apical axil between these two blades lacking meristematic tissue.

Milligania lindoniana is a herbaceous perennial plant species endemic to alpine and subalpine Tasmania. It is restricted to the south and west of the state, where it is locally common, particularly around Mount Field, in areas of restricted drainage on peaty soils. The species was first formally described by Winifred M. Curtis in 1972. Milligania is a small genus of only 5 members, all of which are endemic to Tasmania.

It is a tufted shrub that typically grows to a height of 51–76 mm (2.0–3.0 in) with leaves about 2 mm (0.079 in) long, arranged in two closely overlapping rows, with the bases sheathing the stem. The flowers are arranged singly in leaf axils and are white, about 5 mm (0.20 in) long and bell-shaped. Flowering occurs in summer. This species was first formally described in 1903 by Leonard Rodway who gave it the name Sprengelia incarnata var. distichophylla in The Tasmanian Flora.
