Paul Friedrich August Ascherson

German botanist (1834–1913).

Paul Friedrich August Ascherson (June 4, 1834 – March 6, 1913) was a German botanist and professor at the University of Berlin. His author citation is Asch., although Aschers. has been used in the past. Ascherson was born in Berlin in 1834, the son of physician and senior medical councillor Ferdinand Moritz and Henriette, née Odenheimer. After education at the Margraff boys school and the Friedrich-Werder Gymnasium he followed his father's wish to pursue medicine. In 1850, he started studying medicine at the University of Berlin, but soon started getting more interested in botany thanks to enc

It is native to southern Europe and western Asia, and naturalized elsewhere It has been cultivated as a leaf vegetable in England since the 17th century. As it requires less water than watercress, it is easier to cultivate.
Littorella uniflora (Shore-weed) (L.) Asch. 1864
plant species in the plantaginaceae family
Littorella uniflora (vernacular name: (American) shoreweed) is a species of aquatic flowering plant native to the Azores, Morocco, most of Europe excluding the dry southeast, Iceland, and the Faroes. It prefers to live mostly submerged in nutrient-poor freshwater habitats. When submerged, it draws CO2 mostly through its roots and uses a mix of crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) and C3 carbon fixation for photosynthesis. If the water level drops and exposes the roots, it ceases using CAM.

This seagrass is widespread through the Gulf of Aqaba. Recently it has arrived in the Caribbean where it is also spreading. It is suggested that the expansion of H. stipulacea from the Red Sea into the Mediterranean Sea was a result of the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. The invasion into the Mediterranean was first documented in 1894. This species was first reported in the Caribbean in Grenada, Dominica, and
× Festulolium Asch. & Graebn. 1902
plant hybrid genus in the poaceae family
× Festulolium is a nothogenus of flowering plants in the grass family Poaceae. Naturally occurring hybrids, they are the result of crosses between species of two questionably distinct grass genera, Festuca (the fescues) and Lolium (the ryegrasses), and the hybrids show phenotypic similarities to both parents. This type of intergeneric hybridization is quite rare, and is indicated by a multiplication symbol before the name. The name Festulolium is an example of a portmanteau word, a combination of the two parents' names.
