plant species in the cyatheaceae family
Alsophila havilandii, synonym Cyathea havilandii, is a species of tree fern endemic to Kinabalu National Park in Borneo, where it grows in ridge forest at an altitude of 2,400–3,000 m (7,900–9,800 ft). It is a rather small species, having an erect trunk about 50 cm (20 in) tall or more. Fronds are narrow, erect and tripinnate. They are usually about 1 m (3 ft 3 in) in length. The stipe is dark and warty. It bears medium brown scales with fragile edges. Sori are borne on either side of the midvein of fertile pinnules and protected by firm, dark indusia. The specific epithet havilandii
Alsophila dregei (Kunze) R.M.Tryon 1970
plant species in the cyatheaceae family
Alsophila dregei, synonym Cyathea dregei, (common tree fern or gewone boomvaring in Afrikaans) is a widespread species of tree fern in southern Africa. Within South Africa, it co-occurs with the indigenous forest tree fern (Gymnosphaera capensis) and the invasive Sphaeropteris cooperi from Australia. Further north, outside of South Africa, it coexists with an additional two tree fern species, A. manniana and A. thomsonii. This species is locally known as the common South African tree fern or grassland tree fern (in contrast to its relative, the forest tree fern). It is commonly known as the
Alsophila brooksii (Brooks' Alsophila) (Maxon) R.M.Tryon 1970
plant species in the cyatheaceae family
Alsophila brooksii, synonym Cyathea brooksii, is a species of tree fern native to Cuba, Hispaniola and Puerto Rico, where it grows on serpentine soils in shaded ravines, along streams, and on forested slopes at an altitude of 250–950 m. The trunk is prostrate and only about 6 cm in diameter. Fronds are pinnate or bipinnate and up to 2 m long. The base of the rachis is covered with blackish scales that have a paler margin. Sori occur in two rows, one along each side of the pinnule midvein. In the wild, A. brooksii is known to hybridise with Alsophila fulgens and Alsophila portoricensis,
Alsophila acanthophora (Holttum) R.M.Tryon 1970
plant species in the cyatheaceae family
Alsophila acanthophora, synonym Cyathea acanthophora, is a species of tree fern endemic to Kinabalu National Park in Borneo, where it grows in montane rain forest at an altitude of 1250–2000 m. The trunk is erect and can grow as tall as 5 m or higher. Fronds are 2–3 m in length and bi- or tripinnate. The stipe is dark towards the base and has slender spines. It is covered with scattered scales, which are glossy brown and have a narrow paler margin. Sori occur near the midvein of fertile pinnules. They are covered in thin, fragile indusia, which resemble small saucers.
