Sven Berggren

Swedish botanist (1837-1917).

Sven Berggren (12 August 1837 – 28 June 1917) was a Swedish botanist, explorer and university professor. He was a professor at Lund University 1883–1902, later at Uppsala University. He was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1880. He collected plants on a number of journeys to then little-known areas of the world, e.g. Svalbard in 1868, Greenland in 1870 (both times with Nordenskiöld's expedition) and, in 1873, New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii and California. In 1874 Berggren distributed specimens which belong to a series which superficially resemble an exsiccata work

Carex buchananii (Silver-spiked Sedge) Berggr. 1880
perennial plant species in the cyperaceae family
Carex buchananii, common names Buchanan's sedge, cutty grass, is a species of sedge (in the Cyperaceae family). It is endemic to New Zealand, being found on both the North and South Islands. It has no synonyms according to Plants of the world online, but two according to the New Zealand Plant Conservation Network
Oreostylidium subulatum (Oreostylidium) Berggr. 1877
plant species in the stylidiaceae family
Oreostylidium is a genus of flowering plants in the family Stylidiaceae with a single species, Oreostylidium subulatum, that is endemic to New Zealand. O. subulatum is a very small plant with small, white flowers. It has a complicated botanical history that has led to a few proposals to move Oreostylidium to the related genus Stylidium. The researchers cite molecular data and suspect that this species is an extreme example of floral paedomorphosis. This would not be an unprecedented move since the single species was initially described as Stylidium subulatum in 1864 and later moved to its own
Carex comans (Hair Sedge) Berggr. 1877
perennial plant species in the cyperaceae family
Carex comans is a plant species in the sedge family, Cyperaceae, endemic to New Zealand. It is used as an ornamental plant, growing in clumps of bluish green leaves with heights of 25–35 centimetres.
Carex dipsacea (Teasel Sedge) Berggr. 1877
perennial plant species in the cyperaceae family
Carex dipsacea, the teasel sedge, is a species of flowering plant in the family Cyperaceae, native to New Zealand. Preferring poorly drained soils, it is planted as an ornamental for its colorful autumn foliage. There is a cultivar, 'Dark Horse', which is commercially available.
Carex cirrhosa (Curly Sedge) Berggr. 1877
perennial plant species in the cyperaceae family

Dracophyllum kirkii Berggr. 1880
plant species in the ericaceae family
Dracophyllum kirkii is a species of shrub endemic to the South Island of New Zealand. It was first described by Sven Berggren in 1877 and gets the specific epithet kirkii after the New Zealand botanist Thomas Kirk. In the heath family Ericaceae, it inhabits mountain slopes and bluffs and reaches a height of just 20–140 cm (8–55 in). A 2017 assessment using the New Zealand Threat Classification System classified it as "Not Threatened", giving it an estimated population of more than 100,000.
Dracophyllum acerosum Berggr. 1877
plant species in the ericaceae family
Dracophyllum acerosum is a species of shrub or small tree endemic to New Zealand's South Island. In the heath family Ericaceae. It inhabits mountain slopes, ridge lines and hillsides. A 2023 assessment using the New Zealand Threat Classification System classified it as "Not Threatened", giving it an estimated population of more than 100,000.

Plantago triandra Berggr. 1877
perennial plant species in the plantaginaceae family
Plantago triandra is a species of flowering plant in the family Plantaginaceae that is endemic to New Zealand. Sven Berggren described the species in 1877. Plants of this species of plantain are perennial with a rosette habit, with angular-ovate leaves, tiny calyces, numerous seeds, and often sessile flowers and fruiting capsules. The species is considered to be not threatened.
Phyllachne colensoi (Yellow Cushionplant) Berggr. 1877
plant species in the stylidiaceae family
Phyllachne colensoi, the yellow cushionplant, is a species of cushion plant in the Stylidiaceae family. It is native to both New Zealand and Tasmania, with colonisation of the latter being a somewhat recent dispersal. Phyllachne colensoi is frequently the dominant vegetation in upland bog habitats and is found throughout high mountain areas in New Zealand, but is only recorded from 12 sites in Tasmania in the west and south-west of the island. Phyllachne colensoi is a perennial cushion mound-forming plant with short erect stems that are densely packed. Leaves are sessile and small at only 2–3
