It is endemic to the Baetic System of mountain ranges – including the Sierra de Almijara, Sierra de Baza, Sierra Nevada and Sierra de Tejeda – in the Andalusia region of southeastern Spain. It favors damp soil at elevations between 1,100 m (3,600 ft) and 2,500 m (8,200 ft). Its conservation status was evaluated as near threatened in 2014.
