William Ralph Maxon, (February 27, 1877 – February 25, 1948) was an American botanist and pteridologist. He graduated from Syracuse University with a B.Ph. in biology, in 1898, and spent about one year at Columbia University doing post-graduate work on ferns with Lucien Marcus Underwood. Polystichum scopulinum (Mountain Hollyfern) (D.C.Eaton) Maxon 1900
plant species in the dryopteridaceae family
Polystichum scopulinum is a species of fern known by the common names mountain hollyfern and rock sword fern. It is native to much of western North America, and it is known from disjunct occurrences in eastern Canada as well. It grows in rocky habitat, often in full sun. It is widespread but mostly found in small populations, and is noted to be most abundant on serpentine soils. This fern produces several erect, narrowly lance-shaped leaves up to 50 centimeters in length. The leaves narrow near the bases. Each leaf is divided into many lance-shaped or oblong leaflets up to 3 centimeters long.
Selaginella eremophila (Desert Spikemoss) Maxon 1920
plant species in the selaginellaceae family
Selaginella eremophila is a species of spikemoss known by the common name desert spikemoss. It is native to the deserts and adjacent mountains around the intersection of California and Arizona with Baja California. It grows in sandy and rocky habitat. This lycophyte forms dense mats of spreading stems with small, forking branches. The lance-shaped leaves are up to 3 millimeters long on the lower stem surfaces and a little shorter on the upper sides. The tiny leaves have pointed tips with soft, twisted bristles. The strobili bearing the reproductive parts are under a centimeter long.
Polystichum dudleyi (Dudley's Shield Fern) Maxon 1918
plant species in the dryopteridaceae family
Polystichum dudleyi is a species of fern known by the common name Dudley's sword fern. It is endemic to California, where it is known from the forests of the central and southern California Coast Ranges.
Polypodium hesperium (Western Polypody) Maxon 1900
plant species in the polypodiaceae family
Polypodium hesperium is a species of fern known by the common name western polypody. It is native to western North America from British Columbia to California, and the Rocky Mountains to northern Mexico, where it grows in rocky habitat types. This is an allopolyploid species of hybrid origin, its parent species being Polypodium glycyrrhiza and Polypodium amorphum.
Notholaena standleyi (Star Cloak Fern) Maxon 1915
plant species in the pteridaceae family
Notholaena standleyi, also known as star cloak fern and Standley's cloak fern, is a fern that is native to the United States and Mexico. It is a member of the genus Notholaena, which is part of the subfamily Cheilanthoideae of family Pteridaceae. It is distinguished by the pentagonal shape formed by the blades of its frond, a property other members of Notholaena do not possess.
Selaginella arizonica (Arizona Spikemoss) Maxon 1920
plant species in the selaginellaceae family
Selaginella arizonica, commonly known as Arizona spikemoss, is a species of spikemoss in the family Selaginellaceae. It is native to Arizona, US, where it can be found in rock crevices, or on gravel, sandstone, igneous, or limestone substrates.
Pityrogramma sulphurea (Jamaican Goldback Fern) (Sw.) Maxon 1913
plant species in the pteridaceae family
Pityrogramma sulphurea, the Jamaican goldback fern, is a fern, endemic to the West Indies and naturalized in Sri Lanka.
Elaphoglossum serpens (Cerro De Punta Jayuya) Maxon & C.V.Morton 1947
plant species in the dryopteridaceae family
Elaphoglossum serpens is a rare species of fern that grows only on Cerro de Punta, the highest mountain in Puerto Rico. The fern grows at one location, where there are 22 known specimens. It was federally listed as an endangered species of the United States in 1993. The fern was described in 1947 from specimens found at Monte Jayuya. This habitat was cleared for construction and the plant was extirpated. It was later located on Cerro de Punta. This fern is an epiphyte which grows on the trunks of the tree species Lyonia rubiginosa var. stahlii. There are only six trees that together host the

Christensenia aesculifolia (Blume) Maxon 1905
perennial plant species in the marattiaceae family
Christensenia aesculifolia is a species of tropical fern found throughout southeast Asia. Its leaves resemble horse chestnuts.
Christensenia Maxon 1905
plant genus in the marattiaceae family
Christensenia is a genus of ferns in the botanical family Marattiaceae. The genus is confined to the Indo-Malayan region. The basal chromosome number for this genus is 2n=80. Christensenia is unique in the Marattiaceae, because of its reticulate venation, palmately arranged leaves and radial synangia. Christensenia produces enormous amounts of spores, up to 7,000 spores per sporangium. The presence of a radial synangium is an archaic character, very similar to some of the fossil Asterothecaceae/Psaroniaceae, such as Scolecopteris. Christensenia itself has no fossil record.
Selaginella asprella (Bluish Spikemoss) Maxon 1920
plant species in the selaginellaceae family
Selaginella asprella is a species of spikemoss known by the common name bluish spikemoss. It is native to California and Baja California, where it has a disjunct distribution, occurring in the Klamath Mountains and mountain ranges several hundred miles to the south. It grows in rocky mountainous habitat, on cliffs of limestone rock substrate, and on forest ridges. This lycophyte grows in flat mats with many short, forking stems twisted together. The stems fragment easily, especially as they dry. The lance-shaped green leaves are up to 5 or 6 millimeters long, including the soft bristles at
