The genus name of Whittonia is in honour of Brian Alan Whitton (b. 1935), an English botanist at Durham University. The Latin specific epithet of guianensis means "of the Guianas" (an area of north eastern South America). Both the genus and the species were first described and published in Kew Bull. Vol.15 on page 468 (written 1961, publblished in 1962).

The genus name of Maguireanthus is in honour of Bassett Maguire (1904–1991), an American botanist, head curator of the New York Botanical Garden, and a leader of scientific expeditions to the Guyana Highlands in Brazil and Venezuela. The Latin specific epithet of ayangannae refers to Mount Ayanganna in western Guyana in the Pakaraima Mountains. Both the genus and species were first described and published in Mem. New York

In Venezuela, these plants may be found within Canaima National Park, near to Salto Ángel (Angel Falls), the world’s tallest free-falling waterfall. In Guyana, this plant is commonly found at Kaieteur National Park.
