It is native to Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, and is cultivated elsewhere as an ornamental plant. It has been selected for the Great Plant Picks list of outstanding plants for the maritime Pacific Northwest.
