It is a perennial clonal herb, 0.8 to 1.3 meters (2 ft 7 in to 4 ft 3 in) tall, and develops underground rhizomes that terminate in spherical or ellipsoid tubers that are up to 3–4 centimeters (1.2–1.6 in) in diameter.
