Sanford Myron Zeller (19 October 1885 – 4 November 1948) was an American mycologist. Born in Coldwater, Michigan, Zeller was educated at Lawrence College in Wisconsin, then Greenville College in Illinois, from which he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1909. He earned his doctorate in botany in 1917 at Washington University in St. Louis, and two years later started a 29-year stint as a plant pathologist and professor at the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station in Corvallis, Oregon. He published over 150 scientific papers during his career. Zeller specialized in the gasteroid fungi.

fungi family in the order agaricales
The Broomeiaceae are a family of fungi in the order Agaricales. The family is monotypic, and contains the single genus Broomeia, described by English naturalist Miles Joseph Berkeley in 1844, and named for his collaborator, Christopher Edmund Broome. Berkeley designated the type species to be Broomeia congregata. Species of this fungus family can be found in Mexico as well as various parts of Africa.
Montagnea arenaria (Desert Inkcap) (DC.) Zeller 1943
fungi species in the agaricaceae family
Montagnea arenaria, commonly known as the gasteroid coprinus, is a species of secotioid fungus in the family Agaricaceae.Commonly found in desert habitats, the species is characterized by a cap that has an apical disc up to 5 centimetres (2 in) wide, radial gills, a hymenophore, and spores with a prominent germ pore. The morphology of this species is widely variable and it is inedible.
Sedecula pulvinata Zeller 1941
fungi species in the coniophoraceae family
Sedecula is a genus of fungi in the order Boletales. The genus is monotypic, containing the single species Sedecula pulvinata, found in the United States, and first described by American mycologist Sanford Myron Zeller in 1941. In 2024 it was announced that the mushroom had been found in the Czech Republic in the area of South Moravia in 2011.
Rhizopogon occidentalis Zeller & C.W. Dodge 1918
fungi species in the rhizopogonaceae family
Rhizopogon occidentalis is an ectomycorrhizal fungus in the family Rhizopogonaceae of the Basidiomycota. It occurs most commonly in western North America in association with two-needle and three-needle pine hosts. They are false truffles with fruiting bodies that are yellow on the surface and pale yellow inside. Their edibility is disputed.
Gasterellaceae Zeller 1948
fungi family in the order boletales
The Gasterellaceae are a family of fungi in the order Boletales. The family contains a single genus Gasterella, which in turn contains the single species Gasterella luteophila, found in the USA. The genus and species were described by American mycologists Sanford Myron Zeller and Leva Belle Walker in 1935; the family by Zeller in 1948.
Truncocolumella Zeller 1939
fungi genus in the suillaceae family
Truncocolumella is a genus of fungi in the family Suillaceae, of the order Boletales. It was circumscribed by American mycologist Sanford Myron Zeller in 1939. The potato-like T. citrina is up to 7 cm broad. The spore mass is yellowish, darker in age. One field guide lists T. citrina as edible. David Arora cites one story that it may leave a licorice-like aftertaste that can persist for hours. To determine the odour of T. citrina, mature fruiting bodies were extracted in diethyl ether and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The two major odor compounds that were

Rhizopogon villosulus (Reticulated Beard Truffle) Zeller 1941
fungi species in the rhizopogonaceae family
Rhizopogon villosulus is an ectomycorrhizal fungus used as a soil inoculant in agriculture and horticulture. It was first described scientifically by mycologist Sanford Myron Zeller in 1941.
Morganella Zeller 1948
fungi genus in the lycoperdaceae family
Morganella is a genus of puffball fungi in the family Lycoperdaceae. The genus name honors American botanist Andrew Price Morgan (1836–1907). The widely distributed genus is prevalent in tropical areas. A 2008 estimate placed nine species in Morganella, but several new species have since been described.
Gelopellis Zeller 1939
fungi genus in the claustulaceae family
Gelopellis is a genus of fungi in the family Claustulaceae. The species in this relatively rare genus have fruit bodies that resemble the unopened egg of the stinkhorn Mutinus, with the columnella (sterile tissue extending up into or through the gleba) occupying the place where the compressed receptacle would be in the latter genus. The genus contains six species found in South America, Japan, and Australia.
